Snorkeling with humpback whales in Moorea, French Polynesia: one of the best experiences of my life

 


At the beginning of the trip, a curious stingray took shelter in the shade of the boat, as despite the early hours, the heat was already felt.



Every year, Moorea in French Polynesia hosts one of the most crucial stages in the migration of Humpback Whales.


Between July and November, these whales arrive here after having traveled six thousand kilometers from Antarctica. Their objective is to mate, give birth, and grow their calves, and Moorea is the ideal place for this.


This is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to swim with whales, especially respecting their space.


We had a first attempt, where, after going into the water, the mother and calf were not receptive, so we left the area.


After another search, we found a mother and cub receptive to our approach


In fact, the cub was more than receptive and practically came towards us.



The process of approaching consists of only approaching whales and their calves that are receptive to contact. The boats are at least 100 or 150 meters away, depending on the existence of calves, and the rest of the approach is done by swimming. If the whales move away, their will is respected.


If the whales allow the encounter, the idea is to calculate the places where they will submerge. and be in that area safely, both for humans and the whales


I always felt that we were worried about the whales' safety, but the whales were worried about our safety too.


I will never forget being very close to the calf's mother and looking into her eyes, feeling a tremendous connection.




I have to confess that it was the most incredible experience of my life, and I will never forget what I felt in those moments.

Anicha Stone: The best snorkeling spot in Arrábida Natural Park

Anicha Rock is a rock located in front of Portinho da Arrábida beach, but on the side of Creiro Beach. You can swim to it if you're experienced and check the currents that day. I like to swim in the two hours before low tide, as the water is calmer, and since the point is still some distance away, the shallower water makes me feel safe. Kayaking is also a good option, and it's recommended at low tide to be able to park the kayak. Octopus: the Master of Disguise

I woke up early to go to Costa da Caparica. It's a good spot for snorkeling in the summer and is a 15-minute drive from my house in Lisbon. The water was a little cold, but the visibility was good. I found an octopus and dove in to observe it. It didn't run away very far, but what I found strange was that it was disguised as the color of the rock, and when I got very close, it turned white and adopted a different shape, like a star. I did a second dive, and it behaved exactly the same way; I even noticed that its texture changed when it turned white. It didn't make sense to me that it would lose its camouflage of the rock's color. Until I realized what it was doing: it was disguising itself as a starfish.
