Fig Tree Bay, Cyprus: The Snorkeling Surprise I Never Saw Coming
I'll be honest — Cyprus was never on my snorkeling radar. I flew there for a work convention, fully expecting to spend my days in conference rooms and come back home with nothing but business cards. What I got instead was one of the most unexpected underwater experiences of my recent travels.
The Beach That Stole the Show
Fig Tree Bay is located in Protaras, on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, and it's one of the most well-known beaches on the island — and for good reason. The beach stretches for approximately 500 metres within its own sheltered cove, with soft golden sand and water so clear you can see straight to the bottom. It holds a Blue Flag designation, which guarantees high environmental and water quality standards — and trust me, you feel that the moment you step in.
The bay takes its name from the single fig tree that once shaded its shores, reportedly planted by eastern invaders in the 17th century. And if history is your thing, during beach renovation works in 2010, an ancient Greek tomb was actually unearthed right here.
The Island — Where the Magic Happens
Just offshore sits a small, uninhabited islet covered in low-level Mediterranean vegetation. This is the spot. The islet is easily reachable with a short swim through shallow, calm water, and its rocky edges are absolutely teeming with life. Think schools of fish weaving through the rocks, sea urchins hiding in the crevices, and visibility pushing well beyond 20 metres on a calm day.
What caught me off guard was the density of marine life right there, so close to shore. You don't need to dive deep or venture far — the snorkeling starts almost immediately as you approach the rocky base of the island.
Practical Tips for Snorkelers
Best time to go: Early morning or mid-afternoon (around 3pm) to avoid the biggest crowds
Swim distance to the islet: Very manageable, even for casual swimmers — the water stays shallow most of the way
Sunbeds & umbrellas: Available for rent, managed by the local council at reasonable prices
Beyond the Water
After your snorkeling session, the bay has plenty going on. Water sports like jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding are all available directly on the beach. Boat trips depart from nearby Protaras harbour heading to the Blue Lagoon, sea caves, and Cape Greco coastline — all worth exploring if you have an extra day.
For food, the surrounding area has no shortage of restaurants serving fresh Cypriot seafood, traditional meze, and grilled souvlaki — the perfect post-snorkel fuel.
Final Thought
I went to Cyprus for work. I came back as a fan. Fig Tree Bay was never on my list, and that's exactly what made it so special. Sometimes the best snorkeling spots are the ones you stumble upon when you least expect it — and this one absolutely deserves a spot on your Mediterranean bucket list.
