Santa Maria Beach on Sal Island: Snorkeling at a Shipwreck

Santa Maria is the main tourist attraction on Sal Island, notably due to its fine sandy beach and clear blue waters.

Upon arrival, one encounters a pier, and the largest stretch of sand is to the right, where several hotels are also located.

At the far right end, the coast curves to the right. The Riu hotels are located there, and just over a hundred meters from the shore lies the reef, where various snorkeling and diving excursions take place.

There are usually some waves there, so I asked the lifeguard if it was advisable to swim to the reef, and he said that conditions were acceptable that day and that if I were prepared, I could do it.

I decided to swim that distance to the reef, where there were many fish and a shipwreck, where the fish congregate.
