Snorkeling Terceira: Finally Diving into Escaleiras

 


Anyone who frequents the northern coast of Terceira Island knows that the ocean here is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. I have traveled to this island several times with one specific goal in mind: snorkeling at Escaleiras.

In previous years, the conditions simply wouldn't allow it. The North Atlantic can be stubborn, and safety always comes first. But on my most recent trip, the wait finally came to an end.


A Long-Awaited Entry

Located in the parish of Vila Nova, Escaleiras is a spot that requires perfect timing. On this day, the conditions were finally favorable. From the moment I entered the water, it was clear that this was going to be a standout session. The visibility was excellent, offering a sharp, high-definition view of the underwater landscape that characterizes the Azores.



The Highest Concentration of Fish

What struck me most wasn't just the clarity, but the sheer volume of marine life. I have explored many spots around Terceira, but Escaleiras delivered something special:

  • Exceptional Density: Upon entering, I was met with one of the highest concentrations of fish I have ever seen on this island.

  • Vibrant Ecosystem: The water was teeming with life, showcasing the raw biodiversity of the Vila Nova coastline.

  • Pristine Conditions: The combination of clear water and the massive amount of fish made it feel like a completely different world compared to my previous attempts.


Location Spotlight: Escaleiras, Vila Nova

If you are planning a snorkeling trip to Terceira, Escaleiras is located on the northeast coast of the island. It is a prime example of why patience is a virtue when exploring the Azores. If the conditions aren't right, wait for another trip—because when they are, it is easily one of the most rewarding spots on the island.

Octopus: the Master of Disguise

I woke up early to go to Costa da Caparica. It's a good spot for snorkeling in the summer and is a 15-minute drive from my house in Lisbon. The water was a little cold, but the visibility was good. I found an octopus and dove in to observe it. It didn't run away very far, but what I found strange was that it was disguised as the color of the rock, and when I got very close, it turned white and adopted a different shape, like a star. I did a second dive, and it behaved exactly the same way; I even noticed that its texture changed when it turned white. It didn't make sense to me that it would lose its camouflage of the rock's color. Until I realized what it was doing: it was disguising itself as a starfish. Snorkeling Adventure Okinawa

I arrived in Okinawa by plane from Osaka, after visiting the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, where I snorkeled in three places, and I'll share one of them here: Green Island, Great Barrier Reef  I'll soon write a post dedicated to the Great Barrier Reef. On this trip, I flew more than once around the world, accompanied by my youngest son, Miguel. In addition to Japan and Australia, we visited Dubai and Singapore. It was a demanding and challenging trip, but it also served as a bonding opportunity for my son. During the trip, he was able to visit three amusement parks: Universal Studios in Singapore and Osaka, and Aquaventure Waterpark in Dubai.
