The Great Cretan Wind Swap: Why My Best Snorkeling Trip Was a "Mistake"
They say travel is what happens while you’re busy making other plans. During my trip to Crete in November 2025, I learned that lesson the hard way—and it turned out to be the highlight of my entire journey.
If you’re planning a late-season getaway to Greece’s largest island, here is why you should always keep one eye on the weather app and the other on your sense of adventure.
The Plan: Heading South for Shelter
Standard Crete travel wisdom tells you that in the shoulder season, the South Coast is your best bet. It’s rugged, remote, and—theoretically—sheltered from the biting northern winds that can whip across the Aegean.
Armed with my research, I headed south, expecting calm bays and glass-like water. But nature had other plans.
The Twist: When the Wind Flips
Instead of the usual northern breeze, a strong southern wind kicked up. Suddenly, those "sheltered" southern beaches were taking the brunt of the waves, while the North Coast sat in a literal wind shadow.
Travel Tip: In Crete, "shelter" is relative to the wind direction of the day, not just the map. If the wind is from the South, head North!
The Surprise MVP: Platanias
With my southern plans blown out, I made a last-minute pivot back to the north, specifically to Platanias. I’ll be honest: I wasn't expecting much for a "Plan B" snorkeling session in November.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
Because the North Coast was so perfectly shielded from the southern gusts, the water in Platanias was:
Crystal Clear: Visibility was off the charts.
Stupidly Calm: It felt more like a swimming pool than the Mediterranean.
Teeming with Life: Without the churn of the waves, the marine life was out in full force.
It ended up being the best snorkeling I did on the entire island, proving that sometimes the best experiences are the ones you didn't actually "plan" for.
Lessons for Your November Trip
Be Flexible: Don't book non-refundable activities based on "typical" weather.
Check the Forecast Daily: Look at wind direction, not just speed.
Don't Sleep on the North: Even if the South gets the "sunny" reputation, the North Coast has hidden gems like Platanias that shine under the right conditions.
