3 Ways to Explore the Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is one of the best places to explore the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Exploring the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns through snorkeling can be organized in three main ways: the Outer Reef, Green Island, and Fitzroy Island. Each option has its own logistics, highlights, and tips for a memorable experience.

Amazing Coral on the Outer Reef

Outer Reef Snorkeling
  • Book a dedicated day trip with a local operator; most vessels depart from Cairns Marina between 8–9am and return by 4:30pm.
  • Trips typically visit two Outer Reef sites, such as Norman, Saxon, or Hastings reefs, providing 5+ hours in the water with equipment and lunch included.
  • You can choose between standard high-speed boats or specialized platforms (“reef stations” or pontoons) anchored at the reef—these floating stations allow for more facilities like restrooms, showers, and semi-submersible tours.
  • Sailing catamarans are also popular and often offer a calmer, eco-friendly experience with limited group sizes.
  • All necessary gear is provided, but prescription masks and wetsuits are usually available for hire if needed.
  • Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially during holiday periods.

Green Island Snorkeling

  • Green Island is just 45 minutes by fast boat from Cairns; daily tours (half or full-day) depart typically at 9am or 1pm, with the option to stay 2–5 hours.
  • Snorkel straight off Green Island’s beaches or join guided snorkel safaris led by marine biologists, who explain coral formations and local wildlife.
  • You can hire gear directly on the island or bring your own—most tours require a refundable deposit for gear.
  • Optional upgrades like a semi-submersible or glass-bottom boat tour make Green Island ideal for mixed groups—families, first-time snorkelers, or non-swimmers.
  • Facilities include shops, showers, and cafes; bring sunscreen, towel, and money for extras.
  • It’s best to pre-book your tour, especially if you want to choose optional extras like guided snorkeling or marine talks.

Fitzroy Island Snorkeling

  • Fitzroy Island is a 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns, operated daily with options for full-day or overnight stays.
  • Snorkeling here can be done straight off the beaches (Welcome Bay, Nudey Beach) or through a “Guided Snorkel Safari” tour, which explores Shark Fin Bay and includes equipment.
  • Snorkel equipment is available for hire at the Fitzroy Island Sports Hub, located by the resort pool; no need to pre-book for basic gear, but book in advance for the guided safari.
  • The guided tour gives access to richer coral and marine life, including frequent turtle sightings; buoyancy aids and noodles are available for beginner swimmers.
  • Fitzroy Island also offers hiking, kayaking, resort/camping, and family-friendly facilities.
  • Plan your trip to allow time for other activities, or simply relax on the island after your snorkeling session.
