Snorkeling Raja Ampat: When to go and how to get there?

Image
Raja Ampat is considered one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from October to April. This area is located in a remote part of Indonesia, and it's necessary to get to Sorong, which is about a five-hour flight from Bali. After arriving in Sorong, you need to take a two-hour ferry to Waisai and from there another one to four hours by boat to your specific island, generally arranged by your host . It's possible to reach Sorong by plane from Bali and Jakarta, as well as from several other cities in Indonesia. I chose Manado because it had an island nearby: Bunaken, which is also a true snorkeling paradise. Manado has direct flights from Singapore, which was my gateway to this part of the world . It was an excellent choice, as the snorkeling experience in Bunaken was incredible; I'll leave the video of that part of the trip here: So I ended up taking the following route by plane: Lisbon - Dubai - Singapore...

Snorkeling Sesimbra (Portugal): Left vs. Right Side

Image
I usually dive on the right side of Sesimbra Bay, next to the pier at Praia do Ouro, as it's a more sheltered area due to the bay's configuration. This spot is one of the best snorkeling locations in the greater Lisbon area because even when the sea is rough, it's always calm, and entering the water is not only easy but also allows you to see abundant marine life after just a few meters. Furthermore, I've seen octopus and cuttlefish here in the past. On this day, the sea was calmer, and I tried the left side, which I saw had more vegetation. In both places, I found plenty of marine life. See the underwater video:

Tahiamanu Beach: an excellent spot for snorkeling with sharks in Moorea, French Polynesia.

Image
Tahiamanu Beach in Moorea, French Polynesia, is a popular spot for shark encounters, especially beyond the coral reef closer to the shore. During my dives at that location, I always saw several sharks. Unlike the sharks I saw in other countries, they did not flee when they saw me. Most of the encounters were located on the right side of the beach, where I could see them at various depths. On the last day I snorkelied there, I arrived very early, before sunrise, which didn't provide enough light, but the sea was calm.  I saw several sharks: But I had a surprise: a spotted eagle ray, which I saw for the first time. My obsession with sharks will certainly take me to other places on the planet. But I´m equally certain, I will be back here! See my video of this location:
